Disassociation

Abstraction, the Disassociation of patterns of information from specific instances, is a powerful tool when used correctly.  Memory is associative, so by separating the essential from the superfluous, we increase our chances of locating useful guidance or solutions to current problems in out previous experience.  The human capacity for abstraction appears to far exceed that of any other known species, and has undoubtedly been a crucial survival skill.  It is therefore unfortunate that so many people who should know better, attempt to stretch abstraction far beyond its practical limits, to the detriment of our society.
